1. Do you enjoy writing a romance novel or a thriller novel?

Personally, I have enjoyed writing in both the genres and as a writer it was satisfying to experiment with genres too. I have always believed in instilling positive thoughts through my writing. Whenever a thought strikes, I always think about what message it conveys. If I am confident, then I go ahead and write it. At the end of the day, a reader wants to read a good story. And as a storyteller, if I have to switch genres so that the message reaches out loud and clear, then I feel its completely fine. And even though 11 out of my 13 novels have been love stories, my characters aren’t those lovey-dovey, dreamy ones. They mirror the current generation and reflect the issues of society. Even A Second Chance brings up many issues like failing in life, depression, anxieties one goes through during an arranged marriage, and accepting opportunities full-heartedly and so on, apart from love – an emotion that’s impossible to define.

2. Describe the protagonist Disha to your readers

You know, I really enjoyed writing Disha’s character because you will find some aspects of her in almost every girl around.

Disha is shy, wary and someone who finds it difficult to make friends. Also, she is someone who’s okay with reading and watching love stories, but believes love isn’t meant for her. She feels she is unlucky in the matters of love and relationships. Her family constantly pressurizes her to get good grades, as she is above average in her studies, and her parents want her to be the best. When she gets into a relationship and that fails, her belief about being unlucky in love is strengthened. But after overcoming that depressing phase, she gives herself a second chance. She agrees to an arranged marriage and the prologue is written from her POV where she expresses her dilemma and doubts. I feel most girls go through the same thing the day before their marriage. Wondering if leaving behind everything is the right decision for her. If her new life would be better or worse? Will she be the same person or would she have to change?

The book highlights three phases in Disha’s life.

Her school life: where she develops a crush on someone but doesn’t express it because of her belief.

Her college life: where she experiences love for the first time, the struggles of letting go and realization that it’s okay to fail sometimes.

Her married life: where she embraces a second chance.

So, it’s not about giving second chances to others but giving yourself that chance because you deserve to be happy. It’s your life and you shouldn’t give anyone control of your emotions.

3. Does everyone deserve a second chance?

Don’t you think so? We are not perfect. No one is. We sometimes commit mistakes; sometimes take a wrong path in life. Result? Tragedy happens. A relationship ends. A job is lost. A new business closes. It all hurts. Life is difficult. And your inner demons provoke you to quit, to not try again. Everyone goes through the negative feelings, and you start believing that you are trapped in a never-ending darkness. Then why put efforts in bouncing back in life? Why give a second chance to your life? Because you can. No matter how difficult life becomes, you have to remember that a new dawn awaits, but only if you are willing to embrace it. With closed eyes, all you would see is darkness. I firmly believe each one of us should give ourselves a second chance. You can choose differently. You have that option. But are you willing to gift yourself that second chance? That’s the question. Trust me, it’s the greatest gift that you can give to yourself. No matter what mistake you’ve made. Quitting is just an easy escape.

If you are someone who is struggling with fears, anxieties and depression, A Second Chance will give you strength, hope and courage. It will inspire you to do better in life. It will make you believe that even arranged marriages are beautiful. It will make you dream and let go of your past mistakes. Embrace the new you. Embrace a commitment to change for the better. Embrace what makes you special. Embrace second chances!

4. Your favourite quote from the book?

My favourite line from the book is by Dhruv. It’s his inner voice. It goes like this:

‘Why is “me” coming before “us” when I had promised her. There are people around me who are praying to God and wishing to spend some more time with their loved ones and here I am, who’s still feeding my ego and allowing it to build cracks on the wall of my relationship.

I think the lines have an intense depth, as most of the time, when we are furious, we feed our ego and drift apart from our loved ones.

5. Tell us some interesting characters that the readers will meet in this book?

As A Second Chance is a true story, readers would connect with every single character of the book. They’ll sense that they have seen such people around them and would even feel they are living their lives while reading the book. There’s Kajal – Disha’s best friend who, like every best friend, plays antics that often puts Disha in trouble. But she’s the one Disha can always turn to, open her heart and soul. She is someone who listens, someone who supports her and is always there for her.

Then there are Disha’s parents, who like every other parent, want their daughter to be good in anything she does; mediocrity is something that’s unacceptable. Even during the match-making process they put in the best effort to portray that their daughter has no flaws, and that’s what irks Disha. She wants to be herself and wants them too to understand that she may not be perfect, but she is their daughter. Like I said, the characters have a realistic touch and the readers will easily connect with them.

Then, there’s Raghav – Disha’s college mate. He has seen his parents drifting apart and, after their divorce, he fears commitment. How that fear changes him as a person and the people around them is something that’s really interesting and readers would love reading it.

And lastly, Dhruv – my favourite. I just love the way his character progresses throughout the book. I won’t reveal much about him but I’m sure that every reader would want someone like him and his family in their life. A true friend, caring son and a loving brother!
